i finally had time enough to release my tutorial.
remember that i´m not an expert, i've learn by myself all the techniques i'm showing you, so probably there must be much more better techniques than mine. i'm just showing the way i usually work.
as you know my english is terrible, so please be patient. i accept corrections and suggestion that helps me improve this tutorial.
thanks to you all for waiting this to came up! and don´t forget to click the images to enlarge!
1. drawing and scaning
first of all i start making the picture with a light blue pencil, then i draw it properly with a normal black graphite pencil.
this is very useful when you scan. you can scan the pencil in graycale and the scanner will leave just the black lines.
a) i always clean the image with adobe photoshop.
you can adjust the levels (greys, blacks and whites) in the menu >image>adjustment>levels. you may keep the three arrows closer, making them delimitate a straight line, so the blacks will become
stronger and the grays will almost desapear.
2.vectorizing
when your pencil is clean (mine is still a mess, but i love to work this way) you must open the file with
adobe illustrator.
b) the first thing i love to do is choose colours. i love to mix them creating shapes, giving them some transparency, and putting some of them over the others.
c) then i create a new layer, above the pencil (i already lock that layer to keep it still) in which i start to vectorize the little details, like eyelash, eyes, mouths, buttons, etc.
*d) i don´t use this technique often, but you can also put the pencil layer above the rest and give some transparency to it, if you do so you'd be able to vectorize "behind" it.
e) then i create a new layer, behind the last one and start to vectorize big shapes there.
f) in case you've never used adobe illustrator before, you must know how to use some tools, as the pen. it helps you drawing straight lines but if you keep clicking the mouse when you are creating a path, you can turn it the way you want.
g) you can also use the pencil tool. but it's a request to use it to have a wacom because if you do you will be able to draw with this tool as you do in paper. you can give some transparency to shapes if you want to make them look like this.
h)you can hide the background layer sometimes, to check the appearance of the work.
i)in order to create a texture, you must draw all the shapes and group them (ctrl+g). then you shoud create the containing shape (in this case is the polar bear ear) above the texture shapes, and then you have to create a clipping mask by selecting the containing shape and the texture and pressing ctrl+7. then you just need to place the texture in the correct place
j)when you are ready with the characters. you can create a new layer, behind the two you made before, but above the pencil, and start vectorizing the background there.
k)to create a casted shadow is easy. you just need to copy one of the characters bodies, paste it, group the shapes, paint them all with the same colour, and give them all together the same opacity.
l)then you have to place it behind the body (sending it to the back) and turn it the way you want by clicking the anchor points.
m)and to get it finished, you must do as you did before with the textures. group the whole picture (except the pencil, you must hide it) and then create a containign shape (a rectangle in this case) above the group. then create the clipping mask and there you are. ready for the adobe photoshop again.
n)once you are working in adobe photoshop you need to create a new layer, in order to paint brights and shadows there. you must select a new opacity for it.
o)you can adjust the flow of the brush you are going to use. it will bring a nice appearance to the shadows.
p)you can also choose a soft brush, like this one
q)then, with the magic wand tool, you could select a coloured area in the background
r)in the selected area but in the other layer, you can start creating the shadows as you want
s)and there you are! now you just have to create new layers, with different opacities, keep on testing brushes and you are ready to create your own pictures!

One question - which fformat would you recommend saving to from Illustrator? A PSD file?
